On Thursday, January 25 at 12:00 PM ET, immigration advocates will host an online webinar to discuss the ongoing federal case (CoreCivic v. Murphy) challenging New Jersey’s law prohibiting new, renewed, or expanded contracts to detain people for ICE.
In August, a federal district court struck the law as it applies to private prison corporation CoreCivic, allowing CoreCivic to renew its contract to detain immigrants at the Elizabeth Detention Center. This month, New Jersey groups submitted amicus briefs in support of the Attorney General's appeal of the ruling. This webinar coincides with Immigrant Justice Network’s national week of action calling on President Biden to keep his campaign promises which included closing all for-profit detention centers.
This event will be hosted by the ACLU of New Jersey, Pax Christi NJ, First Friends of NY&NJ, Detention Watch Network and include the following speakers:
- Julia Bradley: attorney with Gibbons P.C. and coauthor of ACLU-NJ amicus brief
- Yanet Candelario: co-founder of The Mami Chelo foundation who was detained at the Elizabeth Detention Center for 13 months and 9 days
- Dominique Kilmartin: attorney with Pashman Stein Walder Hayden, P.C. and coauthor of Pax Christi amicus brief
- Molly Linhorst: attorney and coauthor of ACLU-NJ amicus brief
