In response to the New Jersey Legislature passing S3507/A4652, ACLU-NJ Interim Policy Director Jim Sullivan issued the following statement:

“S3507/A4652 is overbroad, vague, and risks undermining fundamental freedoms protected under the First Amendment, including the right to protest and assembly. Though this bill attempts to increase community safety, it ultimately fails to accomplish that goal and instead will only serve to exacerbate mass incarceration while disproportionately harming Black and brown communities. Given lawmakers have failed to amend the bill in ways that would safeguard civil rights and liberties, we urge Governor Murphy to veto S3507/A4652.”
