In response to the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th president of the United States, ACLU-NJ Executive Director Amol Sinha issued the following statement:
“Even before President Trump was elected, he made devastating promises to erode fundamental constitutional protections wholesale. At the ACLU, we believe President Trump when he says he will attempt to deport millions of immigrants, continue his assault on reproductive rights, target transgender children, prosecute political opponents, and deploy the military to get his way. Time and again, states have been on the frontlines of freedom to protect and advance civil rights and liberties, and this moment calls for the same.
“During President Trump's first term, the ACLU filed over 430 legal actions against his administration. Project 2025 has indicated that during his second term, President Trump intends to slash rights even further. If President Trump follows through on his promises, we will fight back.
“New Jersey will not be intimidated by authoritarianism. Instead, we will continue to lead the nation by example in defending and advancing fundamental freedoms. Since the beginning of the previous Trump administration, New Jersey has enacted new protections to safeguard reproductive freedom, advance immigrants’ rights, and achieve fairer elections.
“At the ACLU-NJ, we are better prepared than ever to confront threats to our democracy. In the months ahead, we will forge the nation’s strongest firewall for freedom to further ensure that New Jerseyans’ civil rights and liberties are protected and strengthened, regardless of who holds the White House.”
