The following statement can be attributed to the ACLU of New Jersey:
“The involuntary commitment bill passed by the New Jersey Legislature and signed today by Governor Murphy doubles the amount of time a person can be held in a hospital without their consent, significantly impacting peoples' access to liberty. New Jersey needs to improve access to quality care, and must address racial disparities in mental health care access. As this bill sunsets after two years, it is essential that lawmakers end this increased involuntary commitment timeframe, and stay committed to protecting patients’ rights and concretely addressing delays to care and increasing community-based services."
