“The ACLU of New Jersey condemns violence, harassment, and bigotry directed at any group. Antisemitism, Islamophobia, and anti-Palestinian and anti-Israeli hate must be denounced and combatted. We must also protect everyone’s right to free speech and the right to express unpopular political viewpoints.
“These freedoms are foundational American values that protect us from viewpoint-based censorship and discrimination. This includes the freedom to advocate for Palestine, Israel, or any population, movement, or cause – including at public universities, where students have a constitutional right to speak out on political issues and organize or attend protests.
“Our rights to freedom of speech and expression are not limited to comfortable times. Indeed, the true test of the strength of our commitment to the Constitution is whether we stand up for our fundamental freedoms in times of turbulence.”
If a student or anyone believes their free expression rights have been violated, the ACLU of New Jersey reviews complaints submitted at www.aclu-nj.org/en/complaint-form.
