The following statement can be attributed to ACLU-NJ Policy Director Sarah Fajardo:
“We’re disappointed in Governor Murphy’s signing of A2378/S3201, legislation that is overbroad and ultimately fails to solve the problem it seeks to address, despite multiple amendments to narrow its scope. Upgrading aggravated assaults on law enforcement officers and preventing those charged with this crime from seeking admission to treatment programs are not data-driven solutions. Overwhelmingly, people engaged in these acts are in severe mental distress and require treatment, not punishment. This tough-on-crime approach has been proven, time and again, to only exacerbate mass incarceration. To advance racial and social justice, and bolster public safety, New Jersey must prioritize humanity over punishment.”
