Newark Communities for Accountable Policing is a movement to build a respectful, accountable and transparent Newark Police Department.
N-CAP is a coalition of Newark community groups and statewide advocacy groups working together for policy changes, oversight, community policing, and accountability mechanisms that protect the civil rights of all Newarkers.
The Newark Police has a long history of a culture of abuse, especially against Black Newarkers, which led to federal oversight to reform the department, following a petition from the ACLU-NJ calling for intervention.
We’re still fighting for the centerpiece of that transformation: a civilian complaint review board that was designed to be the strongest in the nation, but only if the Legislature acts to grant Newark the powers it needs.
N-CAP is a founding member of New Jersey Communities for Accountable Policing (NJ-CAP), a statewide coalition to hold police throughout New Jersey accountable.
